Flight of 2017 Dianhong Black Tea from Yunnan Sourcing
Five Yunnan Black teas from Yunnan Sourcing:
- Bulang (Guangbie)
- Yiwu (Luoshuidong) wild arbor
- Jinggu (Daqing) old arbor
- Mengku (Xiao Husai) wild arbor
- Big Snow Mountain, Mengku
1. Bulang
Quite chalky and bitter, slight metallic, good aroma. Rock taste.
2. Yiwu
Excellent sweetness, honey. Good aftertaste. And salivation. Some astringency too. Significantly sweeter and more honeyed than 4. Or 5. This is what I think of as classic hongcha taste
3. Jinggu
Quite roasty, despite YS’s claim. Chocolatey and toasty . Bitter chocolate. Not very sweet. Slight bancha and yancha notes. Would appeal to coffee drinker.
4.Mengku
Has large leaves like the Yiwu, but much browner colour. Sweet profile, honey, but much more subtle and subdued than 2. Excellent aftertaste strength, this is where the charm is.
5. Big Snow Mountain
Noticeably strong english black tea taste, creamy, good cooling throat feel, and excellent aftertaste. Seems to be slightly less oxidised. Someone used to drinking English tea bags would love this as an excellent version of that style.
Ranking:
2 > 4 >> 5 > 3 >> 1
I can understand why 2,4 are much more expensive than 1,3,5.
